I know it’s been a while since I have written anything worth reading. The truth is other then working and some random nights in Las Vegas, my life has been pretty boring on paper.
I have been back in the US for 3 months now, and it is time for a break.
There are a few places in the world that I would call paradise, and Goa India is one of them. I know you might be thinking “India!! Are you nuts? Jimmy turn on the TV” Yes there has been a lot of bad things happening in India in the past month, but I will not let that get in the way. If I choose not to go due to the terror threats… then they win. I would rather die then live in a world where I can’t go outside “my bubble or safe zone” without the fear of dying.
I had such an amazing time in Goa last year that I can’t wait to get back. This time around I have about 20 or so friends from all over the world flying in for the special occasion. I plan to host the 2nd Christmas day beach treasure hunt, and party my ass off on the beach for New Years.
The only thing I’m not looking forward to is the 34-hour flight/travel time to get there!
This is my first time going overseas for just 2 weeks, so I will only be taking a small backpack filled with sandals, swim shorts, and my new book “The 4-hour work week”. There are a few reasons I am going back and one of them is to check on my pet cow. I know that sounds crazy, but on my first visit to Goa I made tons of friends and one of them was a local cow I named Betsy. She was a sweet old fatty, she spent most of her days lying on the beach and begging for food. She had a small birth defect, her horns somehow grew in a loop right back into the side of her face. The horns were actually breaking the skin as they continued to grow. Feeling that the horns would literally grow right into her face and kill her, I tried to come up with some ideas to help her. After a few failed attempts using a tree-trimming thing to cut the horns I gave up. All the local people keep telling me she would be fine, but they were wrong. I returned 2 years later to find out she died, but just like when I was a kid and a dog would die… we would just get another one and move on.
Upon arrival I noticed a new kid on the block that seemed to be moving in on Betsy turf as the new beach begging cow, so I cleverly named her Betsy Jr.
During my month long stay in Palolem beach I spent countless hours training Betsy. She has a soft spot for neck massages and a sweet tooth for nan bread. She was such a hit with the crowd my friend Meghan made a Santa Hat for her for Christmas. She might be a little bigger now but I hope she is still there and not on a hamburger bun.
So between the sun, beers, sleeping in all day hammocks, parties that don’t end till the sun comes up and looking for Besty Jr…. my 2 week trip to India is going to be the prefect winter getaway! I now have some serious flying to do! Goodnight….

I have been getting a lot of emails from friends and strangers that stumble upon my website saying that they just saw the movie “Into the Wild” and that my life is very similar. In April 1992 a young man from a well to do family hitchhiked to Alaska and walked alone into the wilderness. His name was Christopher McCandless. He had given $25,000 in savings to charity, abandoned his car and most of his possessions, burned all the cash in his wallet, and invented a new life for himself. Four months later his decomposed body was found by a moose hunter in an abandoned bus. The book “Into the Wild” is from one of my favorite authors Jon Krakauer, and now its been made into a Hollywood film directed by Sean Penn. Since there’s no chance is seeing the movie in this part of the world I have opted to read the book. I’m only on chapter 3 but I’m not sure if I should take people saying my life is similar, as an insult or a compliment cause so far this kid seems like a nut job… wait a minute… are you guys trying to say something? … haha anyway but never the less I will continue reading it as I have a lot of time to kill on my 36 hour bus ride to India!

Ok I know my last blog post stated that I would be gone for 3 weeks…. well here’s what happened. When I set out to trek (hike) into the Himalayan Mountains I knew that I didn’t want to carry my own bag. My plan was to hire or buy a donkey to carry my gear, which was mostly heavy camera equipment. I quickly learned that its not possible to get just one donkey as they work in a “Donkey Train” which is a group of donkeys from 8 to 30 following a senior or lead donkey. So now that my dream of buying my own jackass was crushed it looked like I was going to be humping my own gear! I must first say that I’m no mountain man, my experience consists of day hikes with friends in the California foothills… not the highest mountains in the world. Like usual I set out under prepared and poorly equipped with in the first 3 hours of hiking on the first day my feet developed some pretty serious blisters thanks to my cheap Chinese made hiking boots. So on the second day I opted to hike in my trusty sandals, the weather was warm so it seemed prefect.
When the sun was out during mid day I was hiking in only shorts and no shirt, people looked at me as if I was lost and looking for the nearest beach. After hiking for 2 days my shoulders were killing me so I decided to hire the next best thing from a donkey… a human mule. The Annapurna trails are full of human porters carry everything and anything you could imagine. The area I was hiking in had no roads so the only way for these small towns to get supplies was on the back of these human mountain goats. I was amazed by the strength of these guys, the average weight of the loads these guys would carry was around 100-kilos which is 220 pounds!!!! That’s almost twice my weight. I felt like a complete wimp since my bag only weighed around 10-kilos or 20-pounds. The biggest load I saw was a guy carrying what looked to be a refrigerator. The age range of these guys was insane, from 12 to 74…. yes that’s right 74 years old carrying 220-pounds over some of the highest mountain passes in the world, where most of you reading this would have hard enough time just walking let alone carrying that kind of weight. My porter was a 57 year old grandfather…. yes I know it sounds terrible… I can read your mind right now… “Jimmy how can you have an old man carry your bag?” Well this is where the story gets good….

Setting out on foot into the Himalayan mountain’s near Mt. Everest for 3 weeks sounds pretty crazy or maybe even stupid. Well i defiantly know I’m crazy and some people probably think I’m stupid but the fact is going by foot is the only way as there’s no roads. The pay off is some of the most amazing scenery in the world. Since i will be walking i have to carry everything I’m bringing on my back, so with that there is going to be a 3 week break from the website as I’m not bringing my computer and also there’s no internet anyway…. but i will be taking tons of photos and video. There must be a way i can buy a donkey to bring along to carry my bags? hmmm well we will see. Coming from warm climates in Thailand i have no winter clothes… so i have been stocking up on cheap trekking gear here in Kathmandu and also enjoying a few massages to get my muscles lose. I had to spring for a pair of shoes as i think my Chuck Taylors wont cut it… i opted for the cheap $4 hiking shoes made in china. Today i decided to break them in a bit, i found out quickly that the $4 i paid was way too much as it felt like part of the shoe was missing. I would have been more comfortable wearing sandals, so now i was forced to buy a real pair of hiking boots… but in the end i sold my $4 shoes for $2… so not much of a loss. I think i will be glad i made the switch as 3 weeks on my feet is a first for me… the longest i have been trekking was 1 week. So wish me luck!! Goodbye for now….
